Set among rolling hills, by a lake and surrounded by vineyards, some of which are their own, the hotel enjoys one of the Dordogne’s most beautiful settings – similar to Sussex but much warmer and with lots of more wine.

The gentle and peaceful region of Périgord, which includes the Dordogne, is rich in climate, culture, history, vineyards and gastronomy. Dating back to 1597, the Chateau des Vigiers fell into disrepair and was bought and restored to its former glory by the Swedish Peterson family in the late 1980s. With an expertly designed 18-hole golf course built in 1992, the hotel four stars opened in 1993.

Much development work has continued over the past 30 years and the current Château des Vigiers has it all. A fabulous nine-hole golf course in the valley adds to the excellent 18-hole course, a spa and beauty treatment center with swimming pool, a bistro and of course an upscale gourmet restaurant, holder of a Michelin star since 2014.

The bistro is located in the old cellar and offers a selection of tasty local dishes in a relaxing environment overlooking the gardens, golf course and lake. The Les Fresques restaurant exudes calm and tranquility, with an outdoor terrace overlooking the lake and the golf course.

Chef Didier Casaguana offers inventive cuisine based on traditional local dishes, with local products that change with the seasons. Gaining experience in many great restaurants across France Didier joined Château les Vigiers in 2000, building the reputation of Les Fresques restaurant up to its current Michelin star status.

Many Michelin-starred restaurants seem to focus on presentation at the expense of flavor. Certainly not the case here. While the presentation of each dish, including the appetizers and entrees, exhibited great flair and technical ability, the dominant impression was the vibrant flavors and carefully crafted harmony of texture. and flavor. The fillet of catfish with apricots and carrots is daring, but worked to perfection.

The wine list is impressive and covers all regions of France – and only France. Not that this is a problem. On the contrary, it shows the pride of the country, the cuisine and the wines that have such a definite pedigree. Being surrounded by vineyards and owning some of them themselves, the wine list includes a wide selection of local wines, all chosen by Laura the sommelier who expertly advises which wine should accompany which dish.

If you are a golfer, there is no better destination in Dordogne-Périgord than the Château des Vigiers. But if you don’t like golf, so do! A peaceful, elegant and sophisticated retreat, with a spa, bar and two restaurants amidst rolling vineyards. What do you want more ?
