How about trying northern Georgia mountain wines, made from grapes grown on ancient soil in the small town of Tiger, Georgia?
It is a region that has recently gained attention for the quality of its current wine and the exciting promise of what is to come. A chance to better understand why “The State of Peach” is emerging as a premier wine country comes with a tour and lunch at the Center for Life Enrichment Stonewall Creek Winery on October 12th.
The vineyards of Stonewall Creek straddle a scenic valley bordered by Glassy Mountain, Crunkleton Ridge, and the Chattahoochee National Forest. A visit to the winery offers a tour of its immaculately manicured rows of vines ending in traditional rose bushes, a vegetable patch and a classic old barn set in a pasture beside the rumbling Stonewall Creek.
In 2004, founders Carla and Carl Fackler bought an old apple orchard and started planting grapes, starting with Malbec. Over the next three years, they expanded their plantations to include other European grape varieties, as well as Tannat and Petit Manseng.
In 2018, friends of the Facklers, Sandi and Mark Diehl, bought the cellar. Mark and Carl shared a common medical training as orthopedic surgeons. In 2010, the Diehls learned that the Facklers were planting grapes in northeast Georgia; they started to visit the cellar, helping with the plantings and the harvest. Over the years Carl has taught Mark to take meticulous care of a vineyard, and when the Facklers decided to retire, the Diehls jumped at the chance to make their passion into a calling. The Diehls continue the tradition initiated by the Facklers: producing fine wines from European grapes which express the unique terroir of the county of Rabun.
Visitors to the retro-style winery will learn the winemaking process and be treated to wine samples. Perhaps there will be a taste of the winery’s award-winning Cabernet Franc.
If you fancy a big sip of juicy fresh fruit – think blackberries and other ripe berries and tobacco – then this is the wine for you. Unlike most Cabernet Francs, it has smooth tannins and zero pretension. A light lunch will follow the tasting.
