The caring owner of Woodmans Arms likes to support charities

OWNER Faye Thomson loves that her pub brings friends and family together and hosts charity events.

Faye took over The Woodmans Arms in Rayleigh Road, Thundersley, in 2020, and now the pub team regularly organize charity events for good causes.

Most recently, the team held a superhero fundraising event with Simon Foxen and The Thundersley Superhero Alliance for the Karis’ Helping Hand charity.

The Southend Ghostbusters, The Blackwater Pirates Essex, Salvo Stone, Rayleigh Fire Station and The Essex Cosplayers also helped out and together they raised £521 for the brain tumor charity.

Faye said: “It’s good for me to have the pub and to have the opportunity to run charity events. Karis’ Helping Hand charity is close to my heart, my son went to the same school that her little brother and I knew Karis – she was a very brave and adorable little girl.

Faye and Simon are currently planning their new charity event on August 7, with updates available on the pub’s Facebook page. Having worked on the site for two years before taking over, Faye was ready to seize the opportunity.

“I listened to the locals and what they wanted from the pub,” Faye said. “They said they wanted it to be a local pub, not a bistro or restaurant. They wanted a community pub tailored to them, with something for everyone.

That’s exactly what Faye has achieved and the pub regularly offers live entertainment, TV sports, events, an outdoor Tiki bar and BBQ, and a children’s play area. There are over 100 gins, a selection of fine wines and a changing range of beers, plus tasty menu items like Sunday roasts, burgers and fish dishes.

“We have a lot of live music and all genres of music to suit everyone,” Faye said. But she thinks more could be done to support small charities.

She said: “Steve and Angela McMonagle and their family set up Karis’ Helping Hand in memory of their beautiful daughter Karis. The charity has helped so many families of children with brain tumours. It’s not easy for small charities to spread the word about what they are doing I spoke to MP Rebecca Harris about this when she came to our event We do what we can but it would be great to see more support .
