The 2017 vintage is acclaimed in terms of Stellenbosch red wines, but what about 2018? De Trafford to Stellenbosch describes it as “another excellent vintage to follow in 2017 after two years of drought… The disease pressure was very low… Harvest a little later than usual with very few rain problems. Similar and elegant vintage to 2017 with lower acidity and a little more fruit ”.

This property is well known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2018 (price: R370 per bottle) is indeed a beauty. Grapes from four blocks aged nine to 24 years, the vinification consisted of pontic fermentation before maturing for 22 months in French oak barrels, 35% new. Red and black berries, violet and a hint of herbs, pencil shavings and a hint of oak spice on the nose while the palate is full but balanced – great definition of fruit, fresh acidity and hints of oak. firm but fine tannins. With an alcohol of 14.7% it is not short of potency but it is also very well dosed and while Cab monovarietal can be a bit austere it is already quite engaging but should only get better. with time.

CE rating: 95/100.
