This $15 Tuscan Red Wine Is A Juicy, Spicy Bargain

Comment

Here are two reds and a hearty white wine perfect for fall dishes – grilled, roasted or braised. The reds are good-value callbacks to lesser-known parts of Tuscany and below the luxury level of Bordeaux. From Portugal’s Douro Valley, a region known for reds and fortified ports, comes a serious white with depth and complexity.

Sassoregale Sella Antica Rosso 2020

(2 stars)

This wine hails from Maremma, a rustic part of Tuscany near the coast, far from the tourist trails of Florence and Siena, south of the cult Bolgheri wine region. It means value. This red blend, made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, is juicy and spicy. It doesn’t scream “Tuscan” in a way that speaks of terroir, but it brings pleasure with its verve and texture. Alcohol by volume: 14 percent. Bottle weight: 510 grams (medium).

Château La Mothe du Barry Boreaux Superior 2020

(3.5 stars)

The price is climbing – as with everything, unfortunately – but this Joel Duffau label continues to show why basic Bordeaux offers everyday value. It is 100% Merlot, organically grown and not seasoned with oak or other flavors. ABV: 14%. Body weight: 420 grams (light).

Imported and distributed locally by Elite wines.

This white wine comes from one of my favorite vineyards in the Douro Valley in Portugal. The grapes are grown in the Upper Douro, a rugged region up the river near the Spanish border. The mix is viosinho and verdelho, if you keep track of which varieties you have tried. Six months of barrel aging gives the wine some weight and depth, but the key here is freshness. Even five years after the vintage, this wine is lively and energetic. It should age well if you can resist opening it. ABV: 13.5%. pc; 495 grams (Light).

Imported by Folio Fine Wine Partners. Distributed locally by Selection Mr. Touton.
