The press and the trade were recently invited to a digital tasting highlighting the wines of the Alsace region. Participants were able to choose from a wide variety of producers, receive their samples and schedule virtual meetings to taste and discover the wines. Broadwayworld had the pleasure of being a part of this exciting event and we want to share information on the areas we have selected. We highly recommend their wines to our readers.

DOMAIN Charles Frey – This family estate has been operated in organic and biodynamic agriculture since 1996 in Dambach-la-Ville in Alsace. The estate covers 20 hectares, the soils are mainly granite, then clay and sandstone. The philosophy of the estate is to respect the rhythms of nature through a living and balanced terroir. Since 2010, the wines of Domaine Charles Frey have been aged in a natural, warm and functional bioclimatic cellar. Their wines are pure and lively. Wines we enjoyed tasting included the 2017 Pinot Noir; Riesling 2019; Alsace Grand Cru Frankstein Reisling 2018; and Assemblage 2017. See: www.charles-frey.fr.

JEAN BECKERIt is a family that produces and markets its organic Alsace wines including Crémants d’Alsace & Grands Crus d’Alsace as well as eaux-de-vie from the Jean Philippe Becker distillery based in Ostheim in Zellenberg located between Riquewihr & Ribeauvillé. They have been winegrowers from father to son since 1610 and Alsatian wine merchants since 1848. The family vines were converted in 1999 to organic farming. For 20 years, new organic natural wines have been available. The wonderful selection we tasted was the Jean Becker Pinot Gris 2019; Riesling Froehn Grand Cru d’Alsace 2018; Riesling 2018; and Riesling 2019. Visit: www.vinsbecker.com.

DOMAINE KIENTZLER ANDRÉ – The Kientzler vineyard has been passed down from father to son for more than five generations and perpetuates their passion for exceptional dry and gourmet wines. Cultivated with the greatest respect for the land and the environment, they have carried out numerous biodiversity projects, including HVE certification with high environmental value and organic farming certification for the second year. Their vines cover 13.8 hectares including 4.4 hectares of land classified as Grands Crus spread over the municipalities of Ribeauville, Bergheim, Hunawihr and Riquewihr. Their wonderful wines included Alsace Grand Cru Kirchbergde Ribeauville Riesling 2019; Riesling Giesberg Grand Cru d’Alsace 2018; 2019 blend; and Riesling 2019. Visit: www.vinskientzler.com.

DOMAIN JEAN-LUC MADER – It is a family estate that Jean-Luc and Anne Mader settled in 1980. Jérôme Mader joined them in 2006 and their wine production is constantly increasing. Today, in 2021, the estate covers 10.5 hectares divided into 38 different blocks spread over four villages including Hunawihr where the estate is located, Ribeauville, Riquewihr and Kientzheim. Two hectares are located on the Grand Cru sites of Rosacker and Schlossbert. Two hectares are also located on the Lieu-dit sites of Muhlforst, Burgweg and Haguenau. Domaine Jean-Luc Mader produces 55,000 bottles per year, focusing on Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Minot Noir. They also offer Muscat, Gewurtzraminer and Crémant d’Alsace. They believe in letting the geological diversity of Alsace fully express itself in each grape variety. In 2007, they started organic rowing, relying on low yield and healthy soils to produce well-balanced grapes. They harvest by hand and press in whole bunches. After a clean settling, the fermentation starts by itself and generally lasts more than two months. Domaine Jean-Luc Mader exports two of the wines it produces abroad. We had the pleasure of tasting the Reisling Burweg 2019; Alsace Grand Cru Rosacker Reisling 2019; Alsace Grand Cru Schlossbert Pinot Gris 2019; and Pinot Noir Muhlforst 2019. THE RUHLMANN-SCHUTZ VINEYARDS – In Dambach-la-Ville, the Ruhlmann-Schutz estate cultivates 50 hectares of vines. The richness and diversity of the terroirs allow the family to create a generous collection of great Alsace wines ranging from traditional wines from the region to Grand Cru Frankstein or Muechberg. The gamily is also famous for its Crémant d’Alsace. Today, the third generation of the family made up of Jacques-Emile and Louise-Anne Ruhlmann as well as Thomas and Antoine Schutz take over the estate. The estate is currently undergoing conversion to organic farming. We were delighted with their wines which included the 2016 Pinot Noir; Alsace Grand Cru Frankstein Muscat 2018; Riesling Frankstein Grand Cru d’Alsace 2018; and Riesling 2018.
