Like many schools, the Wine School of Philadelphia switched to distance education for a year amid the mitigation measures taken during the pandemic.
It’s about to change.
With vaccination rates of over 90% and state-of-the-art virus mitigation systems in place, the Wine School of Philadelphia will welcome students to its premises at 109 S 22nd St. in October.
“From the start of the pandemic, we felt it was best to minimize the risks to our students and employees,†said Alana Zerbe, the school’s education director. “We therefore limited participation to a small group of wine professionals. We now officially welcome our entire wine community.
After an informal poll showed that more than nine out of 10 students at the School of Wine are now fully vaccinated, the decision was made to reopen. Why such a high vaccination rate? Keith Wallace, the school’s founder, believes the COVID19 symptoms of ageusia and anosmia – the indefinite loss of smell and taste – are the reasons.
“For a sommelier or a winemaker, losing his smell and his taste is a fate worse than death,†he said.
The entire wine school team has therefore chosen to be vaccinated in 2020.
Vaccinated students will be able to take classes without a mask, according to a statement. The school also uses hospital-grade air filtration and sensors to reduce the possibilities of airborne contaminants.
The list for fall includes French and exotic wine tasting classes, a beer brewing class, several mixology classes, and the school’s basic wine class. You can access the full list at this link.
