We found a spot in the sun at the Lamplight Lounge Boardwalk and tried the new specialty cocktails now available as part of the 2022 Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival. Keep reading for our review!

Peach-Basil Blue Cocktail – $17

Gin, elderflower liqueur, peach, basil simple syrup, lemon, blue curaçao and fresh basil

It’s a very complex cocktail with layers of flavor that unfold with every sip. The immediate sweetness of the peach comes to the fore before blending into a perfectly present but not overpowering gin spirit note, and finishing with the acidity of lemon and the herbaceousness of basil. This is a great cocktail to sit back and sip in the warm spring sunshine on the balcony overlooking Paradise Bay. Overall we really enjoyed it and would definitely try it again.

Smoked Pineapple Bourbon – $17

Bourbon whiskey, Italian bitter aperitif, honey simple syrup, grilled pineapple and lemon juice

It’s really good, maybe the best cocktail in the whole Food & Wine Festival, but not as good as some of the cocktails available on the permanent menu. It’s softer than you might expect, which is a little disappointing. The bourbon stands out nicely and gives it a real avant-garde spirit, and a subtle hint of pineapple is welcome.

There isn’t much smoke flavor as the title claims, which is a shame because it would really make this sing. All in all, it’s a well crafted cocktail and it’s definitely drinkable but nothing really spectacular.

From Gotham Steakhouse in downtown Vancouver to Block One in Lake Country Winery, here are some cozy and classic spots for you and your Valentine.

Open Table has released its list of Canada’s 100 Most Romantic Restaurants for couples looking for a great place to book a Valentine’s Day dinner.

Content of the article

Six Vancouver restaurants made the list, including L’Abattoir, but don’t google what it means in French when you look at the menu and look into each other’s eyes.

Also on the list are East Is East Chai Lounge, Frankie’s Jazz Club, Gotham Steakhouse, Lupo Restaurant and Moltaqa Moroccan.

Sixteen other restaurants across British Columbia also made the top 100, meaning the province had 22 of the most romantic eateries in the country – only surpassed by Ontario’s 42 (of course).

And in this time of COVID, most are also offering takeout.

Here are the most romantic places in British Columbia, in alphabetical order, all linked to the Open Table reservation and takeout website.

VANCOUVER

East Is East Chai Lounge

Ornate room focused on trans-Himalayan foods (think Afghani, Tibetan, Indian) from tapas to kebabs and curries with plenty of vegetarian offerings.

Frankie’s Jazz Club

The jazz restaurant with Italian cuisine offers a three-course dinner with music from New York’s Anthony Wonsey Trio on February 13.

Gotham Steakhouse and Bar

Vancouver’s chic steakhouse and cocktail bar replete with velvet banquettes and leather upholstery.

The Slaughterhouse Restaurant

Yes, the name is a bit macabre, but it’s located in Gastown between Gaoler’s Mews and Blood Alley — so its West Coast French-inspired cuisine pays homage to the region’s meatpacking roots.

Lupo Restaurant & Vinoteca

The Yaletown spot offers modern Italian and is close to the downtown bullring. A Canucks game at 4 p.m. Saturday followed by dinner? Is your date a sports fan or — heaven forbid — the Leafs?

Moltaqa Moroccan Restaurant

The Moroccan restaurant presents a seven-course dinner for Valentine’s Day on February 13.

Ferris Upstairs Seafood and Oyster Bar

A cozy spot on the second floor (duh) in one of Victoria’s historic buildings offers plenty of oysters, seafood, and strip loin for the earthlings.

Hospitality block at CedarCreek Estate Winery

Kelowna’s cellar fieldstones and century-old barnwood space with a wood-fired grill offer classic British Columbia cuisine, from sockeye salmon to duck.

The name of this restaurant in Nelson indicates that it is owned by a farmer and offers local, seasonal Kootenay cuisine.

Quails’ Gate Estate Winery – Old Vines Restaurant

The Kelowna Winery brings local Okanagan Valley produce to the table in its airy, beamed dining room.

Catering 62

Seating at this farm in the Abbotsford location is limited right now, so reservations are recommended for their local lamb, chicken, pork, halibut and more.

Frank and I were thrilled to meet Orfila Vineyards’ newest winemaker, Andrew Wisniewski, who has been on board the winery since April 2021.

However, in terms of winemaking, Wisniewski has just completed last year’s cycle of overseeing the estate’s viticulture as well as fruit sourcing and is still in the process of finishing wines for 2021, making it “new “.

Wisniewski shared that he was grateful and thankful for the solid framework of former winemaker and Orfila general manager Justin Mund.

When asked how Wisniewski got into the wine business, he replied, “After attending Univ. from central Florida for biochemistry, I was at a crossroads of being a chemist or (?)…influenced by my mother who was a fine wine store manager in my youth and completed an internship in wine, I was addicted to wine and I chose the route des vignerons.

Between Florida and Escondido’s Orfila, Wisniewski traveled the world to build his career in Australia, New Zealand, Oregon (Dundee Hills), Washington (Columbia Valley) and California (Central Coast). He also completed training at the Northwest Wine Studies Center for Enology & Viticulture in Chemeketa.

During the interview, Wisniewski enjoyed hearing Mangio’s story about walking the vineyards of Orfila with original winemaker Leon Santoro. Santoro is widely credited with putting San Diego County on the international wine map and being the first in the region to recognize the potential of Rhône-style wines.

Currently, over 40 acres of the Orfila estate are planted with the following Rhone grape varieties – Syrah, Sangiovese, Merlot, Montepulciano, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. To date, Orfila has been recognized with over 1,300 awards, including international competitions where Santoro has represented Orfila.

Based on Wisniewski’s winemaking methodology with a minimalist style of letting the vines speak for themselves, I suspect Orfila will continue to rack up awards under his leadership.

“I intentionally make wines to work with food,” he said. “The wine must have soul, characteristics, texture and aromas that make the bouquet and palate memorable and authentic to the vineyard.”

Part of Wisniewski’s seamless approach is the use of native yeast, a process where a small number of grapes are picked, crushed, and allowed to develop into yeast for inoculation into the same varietals for the fermentation process.

Wisniewski likes to use indigenous yeasts for Rhône varietals which have a cooler and longer fermentation than Bordeaux varietals, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, where he typically uses commercial yeast strains for a warmer, shorter inoculation to create more structure and tannins.

Its objective is to be “attuned to the consumer market by making accessible wines that are young, but structured in such a way that aficionados and collectors can keep them in the cellar for years”.

When I asked what was new and coming to Orfila, Wisniewski shared that he was excited about the new water detection system. By using probes in each plot with depth sensors at different depths, they will be able to use less water and have more control over the vines, especially late in the season when vine stress can lead to better results for sugars and physiological maturity.

The other was distributing library wines to Orfila Wine Lovers, or OWLs as they like to call their club members. This will include some 2000 and 2008 vintages.

Like most winemakers, Wisniewski was grateful and appreciative of his team, including cellar master Christian Eckar. This is consistent with Wisniewski’s flat organizing philosophy: “It’s not me, it’s us.” This avoids the winemaker fixing and being too close to the wines.

Eckar held several positions at Orfila before a short hiatus at a winery in the Temecula Valley where he completed an internship. He returned in May 2021 as Wisniewski’s right-hand man and was busy the day of our visit with the clarification stage of the 2021 vintage, which involved racking and siphoning tanks and barrels to leave unwanted precipitates at the bottom before the barreling.

Soon, last year’s vintage will be put into French and American oak barrels for ageing. Mangio and I look forward to future visits to taste Wisniewski and Eckar’s 2021 wines on tap! More information at Orfila.com.

There’s a chic new wine destination in town, and it’s none other than the Post Oak Hotel in Uptown Houston, owned by billionaire businessman Tilman Fertitta.

Stella’s wine bar opened on weekends. It is named after the Fertitta family’s pet pig, Stella.

On RenewHouston.com: How sober are Houston bars? Dry January puts the city’s alcohol-free scene to the test.

The Wine Bar (or should we say, Pig Bar?) Master Sommelier Keith Goldston runs the hotel’s wine program and Julie Dalton is now Stella’s Wine Director after having held the same role at Mastro’s Steakhouse .

“No other wine concept in Houston offers our level of talent,” Dalton said in a statement. “The combination of knowledge and accessibility of our team of sommeliers is what makes us a unique destination. “

Stella’s main wine list features six themed tasting flights and over 50 selections from California, France, Italy and more, but the wine bar also has access to the Post Oak Hotel’s cellar, which contains approximately 35,000 selections from 30 countries. The award-winning inventory is worth over $ 5 million.

On PreviewHouston.com: Garden Oaks Distillery Tasting Room opens, serving fun cocktails

Post Oak Executive Chef Jean-Luc Royere created the food menu. Expect snacks and platters to share such as pretzel bites with chipotle sauce; pork and beef meatballs with basil marinara; three flatbreads including a prosciutto, fig and gorgonzola; four slider options like beef jam and bacon (sorry, Stella); and a selection of cheeses and cold meats.

The 1,800-square-foot Stella Wine Bar also has a patio with a pergola, heaters, and a 13-foot olive tree – for warmth or shade, depending on the season of the day.

Stella’s joins the other six restaurant concepts of the Post Oak Hotel: Mastro’s Steakhouse, Willie G’s Seafood, Bloom & Bee, H Bar, Craft F&B and Bouchée Patisserie.

Craft beer is huge in Boulder, in part because the Brewers Association, the industrial group that represents small independent craft breweries across the country, is headquartered here. For lunch, grab a bite and a flight to Avery Brewing Company. Then, orchestrate a self-guided tour of the Boulder Brewery and sample IPAs, sour and stouts at places like Wild provisions, Sanitas, upward slope, Lodgepole pine, and Uhl’s.

If tea is more your speed, Boulder Dushanbe Tea House is a decorative teahouse located along the shores of Boulder Creek that was donated to Boulder by the Mayor of Dushanbe, Tajikistan, one of Boulder’s international sister cities. The intricately carved and hand-painted building itself is a work of art created by over 40 artisans in Tajikistan. Stop here for a full afternoon tea or just a soul warming cup of chai. For even more tea, take a tour of Heavenly seasonings, which has been making Boulder-inspired herbal blends since 1969 (tours are temporarily suspended due to the pandemic).

For dinner, visit Frasca food and wine, an award-winning James Beard restaurant with cuisine inspired by the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy (Frasca also made The New York Times 2021 list of the 50 best restaurants). Delicate pasta, expertly paired wines, innovative desserts, beautiful presentation and impeccable service combine to create a memorable multi-course dining experience that will be a highlight of the trip. For a nightcap, choose a drink from the restaurant’s traveling amaro cart, filled with current and vintage liquors from the 60s and 70s.

For something a little more casual (but just as delicious), sit down at one of Chef Daniel Asher’s restaurants: Ash’kara for modern Israeli cuisine on Pearl Street or River and woods for high comfort food in a historic miner’s cabin along Boulder Creek. A trip to Boulder would not be complete without a trip to The sink, a must-see college bar on University Hill that serves burgers and pizza. President Obama even made a surprise appearance in 2012 before a college speech and ordered Sinkza Pizza (Pepperoni, Sausage, and Pepper), which has since renamed the POTUS Pie.

Other places to bookmark include Mateo for Provençal-inspired dishes, 14th century oak for cocktails and classic dishes revisited with modernity, black belly for charcuterie and artisanal butchery, T / aco for fresh street tacos and margs, Flagstaff House for fine dining and a view of Boulder below, Bullfight for a wood-fired steak and seafood inspired by the Basque country of northern Spain, and Avanti for a variety of food hall style concepts and views of Pearl Street and the Flatirons from the rooftop terrace. If you don’t know where to eat, Megan Bucholz, owner of Visits to local tables, can expertly design a personalized food tour to suit your tastes and preferences.

The red sandstone hotel also has a lovely terrace for alfresco dining in summer, a large fireplace for cozy cocktails in winter and an impressive selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes at Jill’s Restaurant and Bistro. The on-site spa is a welcome respite from a day of hiking or mountain biking.

A stay in one of the elegant Victorian-inspired bedrooms of the Boulderado Hotel offers a window into Boulder’s past. The majestic red brick building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been welcoming travelers since 1909, when Boulder earned the nickname “Athens of the West” for its natural scenery and cultural offerings. Over the years, distinguished guests have included Robert Frost, Ethel Barrymore, Helen Keller, and Louis Armstrong. The hotel also houses Spruce and fish farm restaurant, the cozy Corner bar, and the speakeasy style Permit n ° 1 cocktail lounge.

Help start a new business

A rendering of the exterior of the Italian bar. (image of the project’s Kickstarter page)

Italian Bar (5008 Connecticut Avenue), the ice cream and espresso company of the I’m Eddie Cano people, has had to postpone its scheduled opening date.

“We have been forced to issue permits with DCRA and our opening date has been pushed back to several months which is costly,” Carolyn and Massimo Papetti recently wrote in a community update. “We were hoping to open last month, but are now looking at late January / early February. “

Advertising

In the meantime, they invite the community to inject a little start-up capital, “to get through the first few months we are open”.

Here is the Kickstarter campaign. As with all Kickstarters, the project is only funded if it hits its goal of $ 15,000, and at the time of writing this, 93 backers had gotten an Italian bar under $ 500 for hitting this. threshold.

“There are a lot of great rewards for your support, from Italian magnets to limited edition ‘speaks Italian’ t-shirts to ‘fillable’ yeti coffee mugs, a month of gelato, etc.,” the Papettis wrote. “We appreciate any help you can give! “

A sign of progress for another new business

AllCare, a primary and emergency care clinic with multiple locations in the DC area, has built its new Van Ness location at 4340 Connecticut Avenue, in the retail space next to Acacia Food and Wine. A few days ago, her sign increased.

AllCare originally planned to open its clinic in the retail space at the south end of the UDC Law School building, which now houses the Van Ness Main Street office. Leeann Hall, president of marketing and communications for UDC, told Forest Hills Connection the clinic wanted less space.

The Covid cancels some Comet concerts

Comet Ping Pong (5037 Connecticut) canceled two New Years weekend shows and one performance on January 16 “[d]due to concerns over the current wave of COVID-19 infections. “

Why is the Connecticut and Nebraska Exxon so expensive?

In November, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer tweeted about the high gas prices.

Twitter detectives quickly determined that the photo was taken at an Exxon station a few blocks from the United States Capitol. Blitzer would soon be inundated with responses indicating that the gas station he chose to use as an example was not representative of prices in the district.

Next, WAMU / DCist weighed in with an article on “DC’s dramatic outliers, sometimes literally located across from stations that offer cheaper gas.” One of them is the Exxon at 5030 Connecticut Avenue.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court last year, the eleven-year operator of that Exxon station accused [owner Joe Mamo] to charge “higher prices for fuel than other gas stations in the same situation” – including neighboring Shell, which Mamo also owns. She also said he was charging her higher rent, all in hopes of canceling his lease (which he tried to do last year, sparking the lawsuit) in order to redevelop the property. In 2019, Mamo bought a property adjacent to the gas station, fueling rumors about the station’s fate.

It’s so interesting to see how your tastes change over time. My first time on a Holland America cruise was when my husband and I got married for the first time and while we enjoyed the cruise back then we were like ‘wow! It’s really an older crowd. Most recently, we took a Holland America cruise to Alaska, and now that we’re in our 50s, we felt great. I enjoyed Carnival in my 20s and a Disney cruise was fine when our kids were younger. Now that I’m older, many of the bells and whistles, like water slides, on many cruise lines are just not what I’m looking for. Here are the reasons I love Holland America.

Bjoern Wylezich / Shutterstock.com

1. Vessel size

Holland America offers spacious mid-size vessels that carry no more than 2,700 guests. This creates a more intimate cruising experience. They are neither too big nor too small. At less than 1000 feet, ships have more options for ports than larger ships. It is easier to find your way around the ship. I never felt like I had to wait for anything on the ship and midsize ships rarely have lines. I also like that they look more like a historic liner than a big box. The classic lines of the ships only add to the timeless elegance of traditional ocean voyages.

2. Incumbent operators at Glacier Bay

I will never forget the Glacier Bay cruise with the ship stopping at a glacier and then turning 360 degrees so everyone can see this huge glacier. It was a highlight of my trip to Alaska. I spent 9 hours cruising the crystal clear waters and listening to the National Park Service (NPS) ranger who boarded the ship early in the day. I saw whales breaching, otters and seals floating beside the ship, and felt the sound of the glaciers calving. It was an incredible experience. There is a total of 153 days of use to navigate Glacier Bay with only two ships per day. Holland America is one of two cruise lines that are incumbent operators under the Alaska National Interest Land Conservation Act and generally the NPS awards cruise lines 71 days of use. . He can also compete for the remaining days of use. This means more options for you to visit Glacier Bay on your Alaska cruise.

3. Luxury at affordable prices

If you can’t afford a luxury cruise like Seabourn, Viking, or Regent, Holland America is a good option at a more reasonable price. You will find many of the amenities that are found on high end cruise lines at a much lower cost. Indulgent touches include luxurious beds and linens, Egyptian cotton towels, and comfy bathrobes found in upscale hotels. Impeccable service is due to nearly one crew member for every two guests. Free room service is available even for the lowest cabin category. Food and wine aboard Holland America ships can rival the biggest luxury cruise lines. (See more in food and wine).

4. Food and wine

Dining on a Holland America Cruise is fabulous thanks to Holland America Line’s Culinary Advice. It includes an elite team of seven world-renowned chefs who bring global influence and expertise to cruise line menu planning. Each has diverse culinary interests that inspire the signature dishes. On board is a talented executive chef who is a member of the prestigious Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, an international food and wine company. On board, you’ll find everything from casual poolside dining to stylish specialty restaurants. Much of the cuisine is regionally inspired.

Specialty restaurants on board come at an additional cost which is well worth it. I still remember having dinner at Pinnacle Grill, a steakhouse. It ranked among the best steakhouses I have eaten on shore. The service was impeccable and the 28 day USDA Prime steaks were almost fork tender. David Burke, an award-winning James Beard chef, as well as a member of Holland America’s Culinary Council, has created innovative recipes that improve the quality of the ingredients. Imagine a fillet of beef nicely served with lobster balls and celeriac purée with a lobster bearnaise and a Bordeaux horseradish sauce. The Pinnacle Grill is a more intimate setting and, combined with beautifully prepared and exquisitely prepared food, made this a very memorable meal and one that I will repeat on my next cruise.

Wine lovers can enhance their education and enrich their trip with an extensive wine list carefully curated by world-renowned wine critic James Suckling, Curator of Wine for Holland America. He has over 30 years of experience and has created James Suckling’s guide to great wines, which is available across the fleet. He hand-selects only wines that have scored 90 points or more and a few perfect wines with 100 points. You can choose from a wide range of champagnes, rosés, reds and whites.

I like that there are plenty of opportunities on board for cooking demonstrations and tastings. Plus, on every voyage Holland America takes a guest chef on board to help you learn about the culinary traditions of the ports you’ll sail to. Attend a food and wine tasting or gastronomic event (for a fee) to learn about local cuisine. Guest chefs will also lead culinary tours through local markets. Imagine shopping for French pastries in Tahiti or heading out into the Thai countryside in search of the best Pad Thai.

5. Multi-million dollar art collection on each ship

I love art and beautiful interior design that is more elegant than the Las Vegas style on many cruise lines. Holland America delivers with stunning and sophisticated interiors adorned with an art collection curated on every ship. Rotterdam, the newest ship in the fleet, has an art collection valued at over $ 4.1 million. It is organized by YSA Design, based in Oslo, and ArtLink, based in London, in partnership with hotel design studio Tihany Design. With 2,645 works valued between $ 500 and $ 620,000, it is practically a museum at sea. I like the diversity of the collection which represents 37 nationalities among the artists.

6. Catholic Mass

For practicing Catholics, having a priest on board for church services is a plus. Unlike many Christian denominations, we are required to attend Mass on Sunday. This often comes into my decision-making process for planning a vacation. Holland America is the only cruise line (other cruise lines have a priest for vacations or special cruises) to have a Catholic priest on board each ship for daily and Sunday services. This is a plus for Catholic crew members who are away from home for months.

7. COVID-19 protocols

Although I haven’t sailed since the start of the pandemic, Holland America has put in place various procedures that will make me feel safe again. First, all guests must be fully immunized and provide a negative COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours of departure. If a test is needed to get home, Holland America will provide one free of charge. Public spaces and cabins are cleaned and disinfected frequently with a medical grade disinfectant proven to kill coronaviruses. Staff are always masked, and guests are required to wear masks in certain interior areas of the ship. Frequent hand washing and the use of hand sanitizer are encouraged and stations are available around the ship.

Air handling systems on board all ships now feature improved air filtration that combines an improved system with increased circulation of fresh air. Award-winning medical centers on board are fully staffed with doctors and nurses trained to deal with COVID-19. They are also equipped with testing and processing capabilities if needed. The company continuously reviews all local health and safety guidelines for any ports the ship may visit. Depending on the country, you may need to take a shore excursion provided by Holland America to get ashore.

If you are thinking of booking a Holland America cruise, the line serves 14 unique destinations and over 473 ports. You can travel from as little as a day to a 128-day Great World Voyage that takes you around the world. The company’s most recent vessel, the Rotterdam, Expected to sail the Caribbean this winter, a Panama Canal cruise in March 2022 from Fort Lauderdale and across Europe from spring 2022 from Amsterdam. There are also repositioning cruises.

Napa Valley is a wine lover’s utopia. In this beautiful and productive region, you can experience some of the best libations, food and scenery in the world. Nearly four million visitors make their way to California’s most renowned wine country each year; it is a popular place.

But Napa Valley isn’t California’s only wine country. Less than 90 minutes from San Francisco, four wine regions produce award-winning wines in a relaxed environment that invites you to take a sip of California and watch the sunset.

For Napa Valley alternatives, explore these four regions. Just a short drive from San Francisco, every region has a different vibe, from the bustling urban to the laid-back agrarian.

Thank you, Visit Tri-Valley, for a tour of these wineries, restaurants and museums and for accommodation at The Rose Hotel. It was wonderful, and all opinions in this article are my own.

Marie Charlebois

1. Anderson Valley

Mendocino County

90 minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge, turn northwest into the Anderson Valley of Mendocino County. The two-lane Highway 128 turns and winds through a long coastal valley. The valley is a collage of vineyards, farms, ranches and micro-towns. Better yet, it’s the wine country, one of the oldest in California.

Make your visit to the wine country through Anderson Valley a little hit and miss. Learn the art of the U-turn. You will inevitably pass a tasting room, farm stand, cafe or dairy that speaks to you, so turn around and walk away.

Can’t decide where to stop? To try Maple Creek Vineyard for wine and a gallery (the winemaker is a famous artist). Silence is the oldest winery in Anderson Valley. Penny Royal Farm serves and sells its wine and its fabulous goat cheese. There is also Disco Ranch wine bar and specialty market for wine tasting, tapas and picnic supplies.

The Madrones in Philo, it is the place where you can escape to the land of wine and never leave the place. Accommodation, restaurant, tasting rooms and hidden garden are bordered by vineyards.

Anderson Valley is uncrowded, laid back, and perfect for slowing down and unplugging. Learn more about Visit the Anderson Valley.

Pro tips: Take the unforgettable Highway 128 northwest through a tunnel of redwoods to Navaro Redwoods River State Park. Once there, make a driftwood sculpture. A 30 minute drive northwest of Anderson Valley you will reach the Pacific Ocean. A crescent-shaped sandy beach sits at the mouth of the Navaro River. It is a driftwood beach popular with beach goers for building driftwood sculptures and shelters. Your structure may return to the sea at the next high tide, so be sure to take some photos.

Food and Wine in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County

2. Saint Rose

Sonoma County

Santa Rosa, in Sonoma County, is where the big boys play side-by-side with hand-made wines in small batches. The small town is an hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The region is home to 495 wineries and over 25 breweries. Sadly, many vineyards and wineries were wiped out by wildfires in 2017 and 2020. Yet with a phoenix’s determination, the county’s vineyards, homes, and businesses have been restored.

Some of the world’s most famous labels have made Santa Rosa their home – Korbel, Kendall jackson, and Francis Ford Coppola all have tasting rooms, restaurants and spectacular experiences beyond drinking wine.

For a relaxed day in the countryside, you will find regional vineyards like Saint Francis and Martin ray. Bring a picnic, buy a bottle, and spend time watching the clouds change shape.

West Safari in Sonoma County
Safari Ouest (Photo credit: Mary Charlebois)

Luxury glamp at West Safari and join The Rhinos and Winos Tour for an outdoor wine and cheese tasting in Sonoma County. It is an unforgettable visit through an African wildlife reserve with a tasting overlooking the valley.

If glamping and wildlife is not your style of accommodation, I suggest the Art house in downtown Santa Rosa. Art House is a brand new hotel featuring Urban Chic and ease of driving. Two blocks from downtown plaza, you’ll be spoiled for choice for activities, dining, wine tasting, and city walks.

Food and wine pairings are superior to Francis Ford Coppola and Saint Francis. Coppola’s restaurant in the cellar, Rustic, is refined Italian cuisine, Coppola wine and sublime meals indoors or on the terrace. Don’t miss it.

There are countless wineries and tasting rooms to try in Santa Rosa. Learn more about this wine region here. Additionally, you will find breweries listed on the same page.

Pro tip: The man and his beloved cartoon characters are honored in many places in Santa Rosa, and no trip to the region would be complete without visiting the Charles M. Schulz Museum.

The museum is entertaining for Peanuts fans of all ages. Immerse yourself in the life and times of man and see how the characters have developed over time. Your entry includes the theatrical performance Peanuts television and theater films. In addition, there is an art room where you can learn to be a draftsman. You will have more smiles here than in any other museum you visit.

3. Tri-Valley

Thirty-five miles east of San Francisco, you will discover Tri-Valley. The region includes Danville, Pleasanton, Livermore and Dublin. These valleys are known as the birthplace of California Chardonnay.

After the end of Prohibition, this region had mature vineyards of Chardonnay grapes from France. Most of the vineyards were uprooted and the cellars destroyed. However, some vineyards in the Tri-Valley were exempted and allowed to make sacramental wine.

When Prohibition ended, these wineries were one step ahead of the rest. The cuttings were shared, and Chardonnay became one of the first Californian wines available after Prohibition. Try some at went, Charles R, Concannon, and Omega Route.

Pleasanton Farmers Market
Marie Charlebois

When you visit Livermore, come back to Lifetime, a casual California farm-to-table restaurant. The bright, open bar and restaurant are both modern and rustic. In Pleasanton, Sabio on hand are the masters of food and wine pairings.

the Pleasanton Farmers Market is the perfect place to taste the diversity of fruits, vegetables and meat produced in the region.

In Pleasanton, The Rose Hotel to my highest recommendation. This luxurious, elegant, timeless and relaxed hotel was built by coach John Madden for his visiting friends and family. It’s a Tri-Valley treasure.

Pro tips: When you’re in Tri-Valley, don’t miss the Black Falcon Museum in Danville. The Blackhawk first saw the light of day in 1988 as the Behring Auto Museum. In 1991, an extension added the art, science, culture and history building. Beautifully displayed vintage cars are just one floor of this extraordinary museum. Learn more about Tri-Valley on Visit Tri-Valley.

Vegetarian Wraps On The Farm In San Mateo County

4. San Mateo County

Better known as Silicon Valley, this region was growing grapes and producing wine long before technology prevailed.

In San Carlos, a short walk from Caltrain station, the wineries have made a community known as Mid-Peninsula Wine Route. All vineyards are within walking distance.

The collection of handcrafted family cellars wins awards and makes fans for their traditional and innovative wines. There are no vineyards in the heart of the city; however, grapes from across the county are brought to these charming wineries and made into small batches of delicacies.

My favorites in the group are Flying suitcase wines, Russian Ridge Vineyard, Old Country Cellars, and Cuvée Wine Cellars. All are welcoming and passionate about their creations.

Some wineries on the trail serve food. Restaurants and food trucks also occupy the area. It’s the perfect place to get an immersive taste of San Mateo County’s libations and meals.

Donato Enoteca in Redwood City is an Italian restaurant using local ingredients to prepare a traditional four star Italian. The seafood is exquisite here. The wine list includes local, Californian and Italian wines.

Farm House at Belmont is a neighborhood secret, showcasing locally made wines, produce, seafood and meat. It’s all homemade.

Residence Inn Redwood City / San Carlos is the place to stay when visiting this region of the California wine country. It is brand new, packed with all amenities, and designed with guest comfort and experience in mind. I want to live here.

Pro tip: Take a day trip to Half Moon Bay to eat seafood, stroll the docks, kayak in the harbor, and hike the paved coastal path. This fishing village provides fresh seafood daily to local and San Francisco restaurants.

Getting There

I have highlighted four wine regions that are within a comfortable driving distance of San Francisco International Airport (SFO). All major airlines, car rental companies and shuttle services are available at SFO. The alternative airports are Oakland, San Jose, and Santa Rosa. You will need a car and a GPS to get around these four wine regions.

Pro tip: If you choose to stay in San Francisco, you won’t need a car in town. Driving is a challenge. Parking fees are astronomical – around $ 60 per day at hotels. Public transportation is efficient, frequent and economical. Look in a 1, 3 or 7 day visitor pass for unlimited rides at very low prices on trams, MUNIs and cable cars. If you want to take a day trip to the wine country, hire one for the day.

These four California wine regions are among the oldest in the state. Each has its own story and a different personality. Explore, get lost, find your way back. Follow your inner compass. When you need a suggestion, the recommendations I’ve made are places I’ve known. I lingered over the wine, celebrated the food, and hugged the pillows. This is my home ground.
