Mountain AVA in Napa County welcomes visitors
Saint Helena, Napa Valley, August 2021 – The Spring Mountain District AVA wineries in St. Helena welcome visitors and customers to their tasting rooms. Like most Napa Valley wineries, tours are by appointment only.
This AVA was perhaps one of the hardest-hit growing regions when glass fire broke out in Napa Valley last fall. Thanks to the resilience of Spring Mountain farmers, the roads are now cleared and the vineyards welcome customers.
There are currently around 30 vineyards and cellars in the appellation, encompassing 1,000 hectares of vines. With a unique identity formed over a century and a half, the Spring Mountain District appellation became an official AVA in 1993. The region is known for its wide range of mixed deciduous forests, which include oak, madrone, and fir. Douglas, redwood, tan oak and evergreens. The AVA is known for its steeply sloping boulders of vines, which extend on slopes of up to 30% at elevations between 200 and 2,250 feet.
The Spring Mountain District AVA is primarily accessible via Spring Mountain Road, a 10-15 minute drive from the city of St. Helena. Spring Mountain Road offers spectacular views as the road winds its way to the top of the AVA. Heavily forested, the area does not look commercial, as there are relatively few vineyards, most of which are not visible from the road. The wineries here grow highly regarded Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay, as well as excellent Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Syrah and Zinfandel.
