A GoFundMe page was set up for the purpose of restoring an antique yacht to its “former glory”. Gary Demers, an Island woodcarver, set up the page Tuesday with the goal of raising $ 50,000 to restore a 1929 Fleetwing Forty. To date, $ 1,140 has been raised for the cause. According to Demers, 75 percent of the boat has been restored by its previous owner, and the interior is what remains to be completed. He plans to name the ship “Nonchalanceâ€.
“Only a few cruisers from the 1920s have survived years as intact as this one,” Demers said in the post. “From the moment I laid eyes on this rare beauty, I felt a vocation to restore the boat to its former glory so that future generations have the opportunity to discover this little slice of luxury.”
Once the restoration process is complete, Demers plans to “make the boat available to Island residents and visitors for sunset cruises, educational tours and special occasions.”
Demers first heard about the yacht in a 2015 ad. The person who posted the ad was deceased, but thanks to much research, Demers was able to track down the person who inherited the vessel. Demers received an invitation to view the yacht and bought it later. “He [the previous owner] I didn’t want just anyone to work there, â€said Demers.
Demers told The Times that he was 70 and could relax on his Social Security benefits, “I’d rather sink into this boat.”
