One of Virginia’s finest wineries

My name is Beth and I’m from Virginia and I love finding hidden gems all over the state. I’ve enjoyed spending time in just about every corner of Old Dominion, but I have to admit there’s something particularly captivating about the Shenandoah Valley. It’s quaint, sure, but it’s the way the local community celebrates the land that’s truly remarkable. Nowhere is this more true than in the small area of ​​Delaplane, Virginia. Below is my personal experience of visiting the crown jewel of Virginia wine country: RdV Vineyards.

If you are someone who appreciates good wine, a trip to Napa Valley is probably at the top of your to-do list. But you’ll be pleased to hear that Virginia has its own version of Wine Country and, call us biased, but we think it’s just as innovative. This is especially true of a charming local winery that is making great strides in the world of wine: Rendez-Vous Vineyards. According to their website, “RdV wines express the essence of an extraordinary place”. Having heard that RdV Vineyards was a really special destination, we visited and found it to be absolutely true. Here’s a little more about what we found so special about RdV Vineyards in Delaplane, Virginia, and why we can’t wait to return soon.

Nestled on a beautiful 16 acre vineyard in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this property looks like something out of a painting.

It’s important to note that unlike many Virginia wineries, RdV Vineyards requires advance reservations. You can’t just drop by, but the benefit of this is that your planned visit will feel like a special occasion.

Despite being a few minutes late, the hostess was kind enough to update us on the tour. Additionally, we were welcomed with a Veuve Clicquot flute which added a festive note to the occasion.

The winery was started by Rutger de Vink, convinced that Virginia can produce wine as impressive as anywhere else in the world.

And these wines did not disappoint. The limited selection of red wines available to taste were complex and dense without being overpowering, proving that Virginia soil is truly something special. The tasting also included a delicious charcuterie board, which paired perfectly with each pour. Enjoying such a delicious variety of local Virginia produce, we truly felt like we were in wine country.

Lost Mountain is perhaps the most famous and well-known bottle. It’s pricey, with vintages averaging more than $150 a bottle, but prominent wine critics have praised it. A noteworthy review by famed critic Robert Parker Jr. described it as “A remarkable cabernet blend – complex, velvety and world-class. A revelation.” No wonder there’s a reserve list! We did not join, but we were certainly tempted.

After our tasting, our guide recommended another fantastic place in the region: Grounds and main restaurant. We were happy to sample a few veggie burgers from this delicious restaurant as we discussed how special this part of the state is. This was a day trip that we can’t wait to relive!
