A Long Island vineyard and carpentry have come together to honor area veterans and Gold Star families.

Del Vino Vineyards in Northport presented 11 military families and two Gold Star families with a personalized, hand-crafted American flag at the Giants Wood Shop on Long Island.

Among those honored were veterans from all branches of the military, including John Gatto, 91, a United States Navy, and Jack Vogt, 92, of the United States Army, who served in the Korean War.

Flags were presented in honor of Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan B. Bruckenthal and Chief Warrant Officer John William Engeman.

Bruckenthal and Engeman were residents of Northport and East Northport, respectively. Bruckenthal was an American coast guard who was killed in Iraq in 2004. His parents were present to receive the flag.

Engeman was killed in action in Baghdad in 2006. His sister Patti and his brother-in-law were present for his flag.

“Independence Day is above all an opportunity to reflect on the bravery, courage, foresight and genius of those who drafted the Declaration of Independence. Felt attached to higher principles: freedom, equality, opportunities and autonomy, ”said Lisa Giachetti, owner of Del Vino Vineyards.
