‘James to write off $2.1 million in student debt in settlement

The La’ James International College school of cosmetology will forgive $2.1 million in student debt as part of a settlement with the Iowa Attorney General’s Office. The college will also pay $500,000 to the state and $25,000 each to Cynthia and Travis Becher. lawsuit filed in 2014 alleging that La’ James engaged in deceptive, omissive and unfair marketing, enrollment and teaching practices. Going forward, this agreement will help standardize rules of the game for current and prospective students, and it is implementing an external monitor to help ensure future fairness and compliance.” The college should provide a disclosure form for new students and for current students, change the how it enables students to complete their required practical training. “This settlement addresses certain past practices of La ‘James’ that we believe were simply unfair to many of his students,” Miller said in a press release. “We’ve heard from students who have tried in good faith to better themselves by enrolling in La’ James programs and found that the programs don’t always match the promises. Going forward, this agreement will help standardize rules of the game for current and future students, and it puts in place an external monitor to help ensure future fairness and compliance.

The college must provide a disclosure form for new students and, for current students, modify the way it allows students to complete their required practical training. Students will also not be required to perform janitorial or sanitation services.
