Green Acres Baptist Church Pays Millions In Medical Debt For Thousands Of People In Smith County

Christmas arrived a day earlier for many in Tyler this year. The Green Acres Baptist Church has announced that its worshipers have raised enough money to pay off about $ 9 million in medical debt.

Worshipers donated just over $ 45,000 earlier this year to an organization called RIP Medical Debt who abolishes medical debt by buying big wallets for pennies on the dollar. The conversion, according to RIP Medical Debt, equals one dollar of donation equals $ 100 of debt forgiven.

On Christmas Eve, the church announced it would buy medical debts for about 5,000 more residents of Smith County. This, plus a previous donation, brings the total debt forgiven to about $ 9 million.

According to RIP Medical Debt, there are nearly $ 1 trillion in unpaid medical debt that will likely never be paid off. Thus, lenders are prepared to incur a loss on the total unpaid amount in order to recoup some return on their investment – by selling large quantities at reduced rates (similar to wholesalers like Costco and Sam’s Club).

This is how RIP Medical Debt turns a dollar into $ 100.

The Green Acres Baptist Church launched its KINDNESS25: 40 program in September when it made the first donation to RIP Medical Debt. The latest donation is also part of this initiative.

Pastor David O. Dykes

“Because he was so generous in forgiving us, this idea of forgiving an unpaid debt is only a reflection of God’s love for us,” he added.

A yellow envelope in mail from Green Acres Baptist Church says those receiving it have been chosen to receive aid – so don’t throw them away, the church has warned.

Donations to Green Acres Baptist Church are always open for his “2019 End of Year Donations” until 11:59 pm tomorrow night.
