Fox Run Vineyards’ 2019 Riesling Reserve wins “Best of Show”

FINGER LAKES – The Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association (ASWA) hosted its 16th annual wine competition August 14-15 at Marriott Tysons Corner in Virginia. The ASWA Wine Competition is the largest in the country and focuses exclusively on East Coast wines. This year, our judges evaluated 484 diverse wines made in the eastern United States.

Fox Run Winemaker Peter Bell is well known for his leadership and support of the US wine industry and was awarded the ASWA Wine Grape Productivity Plateau in 2018.

This year Best Wine of the Show, Fox Run Vineyards Reserve 2019 Riesling, was selected among the 30 best winners in the category. The Fox Run Vineyards 2019 Reserve Riesling was made from 100% estate-grown grapes from an exceptional single batch that produced what the winery notes as “an unusual varietal aroma and flavor intensity”.

This wine is the first reserve bottling that the winery has produced in eight years, indicating the distinctive characteristics of the grapes from this batch. The wine is dry with 1.7% residual sugar, 8.0 grams / liter of acidity, a pH of 3.21 and an alcohol content of 11.6%. Four hundred and eighty-one cases were produced.

Fox Run Vineyards is located in Benton on Seneca Lake. The winery is owned by Scott & Ruth Osborn and Albert & Kathleen Zafonte. Winemaker Peter Bell, Assistant Winemaker Ashley McCaffrey and Vineyard Manager John Kaiser are responsible for the growth and production of this award-winning wine. Bell is well known for its leadership and support of the US wine industry and was awarded the ASWA Wine Grape Productivity Plateau in 2018.

The ASWA Wine Competition 2021 awarded 78 gold medals, 120 silver medals and 148 bronze medals. Competition President Dave Barber said: “A panel of well-qualified independent judges from different industry levels and hailing from several states on the East Coast and as far away as California, rated the red wines and rosé the first day and the whites the second day. . “The final round, after scores had been counted for all Best of Category entries, took place on Sunday afternoon.

ASWA holds an awards ceremony on Capitol Hill each year after the competition ends under the auspices of the Congressional Wine Caucus. The Perpetual Jefferson Loving Cup, designed by Tiffany in sterling silver, will be engraved with the winning winery’s name and awarded to the Best of Show winner.

Winning wines will be showcased at the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium in Sacramento, California, the wine industry‘s premier conference and trade show typically attracting 15,000 attendees. The wines are typically covered on several West Coast radio shows while ASWA representatives are in California, and a seminar and tasting at UC Davis is scheduled. The opportunities for increased exposure will continue throughout the year. ASWA President Grant Crandall said: “We are delighted to have a number of superb competition wines to take away across the country to demonstrate that East Coast wines can successfully compete at the international scale. “
