In the 1970s, Massimo Galimberti was one of the visionaries who believed there was a future in mail order wine sales in Spain. Now, 48 years later, the time has come to pass the baton to the next generation and his eldest son, Carlo Galimberti, takes over the presidency.

Madrid, September 2021. Carlo Galimberti joined Vinoselectción 24 years ago. For a long time he was in charge of new projects, some outside Spain, Uruguay, Argentina, Canada, Brazil, Peru and Italy. This led to the creation of the international division of the Club, which he has been managing for three years. His work focused on management of international subsidiaries, launch of new business lines and optimize areas of vital importance to the company.

He is excited to take on this role and now faces the challenge of continuing to strengthen Vinoselectción’s absolute leadership in online wine sales in Spain and to expand it internationally. ‘The active chairman and board of directors that I envision must have strong and robust leadership. The board of directors has therefore renewed its confidence in general management, ”he explains. Moreover, convinced that “a company is built from large, small, fast and sometimes strategic actions”, he reveals that “we have set up an external board of directors for Vinoselectción composed of professional and independent men and women to advise us in making important decisions ”.

The beginnings: a visionary of mail order sales

Italian Massimo Galimberti, founder of Vinoselectción, has been president ever since. Over the past 48 years, his influence has extended to all actions undertaken by the company, which is currently present in seven countries with more than 160,000 customers and an annual turnover of 33 million euros. in Spain. From his position, he helped shape the taste of Spanish society for wine.

On May 10, 1973, Massimo Galimberti launched the first Vinoselección campaign by sending out 10,000 brochures and bringing together the first 100 members of the club – one percent, a significant figure for Spain in the 1970s where mail order sales had a very bad reputation. At the time, Galimberti was still working as a physicist for an engineering company. As he says: “The particularity that Vinoselectción offered to the world of wine was the added value of information.. At the time, people drank more wine, but of lower quality. Today, they make choices based on better judgment, with preferences, aided by communication and information that was not available at the time. We have started to provide this added value. We didn’t just provide wine, we brought some happiness to the people ”.

A change of generation

Massimo Galimberti’s passion for the business has rewarded him with the gift he claims life has given him: to be part of the world of wine and to witness its development in Spain during this period. Today, after nearly five decades at the helm of Vinoselectción, he hands over the reins to his eldest son, Carlo Galimberti, to ensure the continuity of the family and the commitment to the growth of the company. All this is possible thanks to the organization of the transition, starting with the signing of a family protocol, the creation of a family board of directors and the evolution of the management bodies of the company, which now has ‘a strong board of directors. This new board of directors recently chose Carlo as chairman.

“As President of Vinoselección, it is my job to guide the company on the path of growth, continuity and economic and financial stability, as well as respect for our values and always safeguard the interests of the family that owns it. This is also what sets a family business apart from others, ”says Carlo. “In addition, strengthening and developing the company in the Spanish and foreign markets is a priority. It’s a challenge, because economic cycles are shorter, competition is more dynamic, technology is making more and more the difference, customers are more demanding and constant professionalization is a priority ”.

Carlo Galimberti: entrepreneurial spirit

Carlo Galimberti (London, 1968) has a diploma in management College of Trade of Paris (ESCP). Born in a multicultural environment, he speaks four languages, to which he has recently added Portuguese.

He started his career with the American company Gemini Consulting, dividing his time between Paris, Milan and New York. Two years later, in 1997, after having lived abroad for fifteen years, he returned to Madrid to join the family business. Since then his work has focused on running international subsidiaries, launching new businesses and optimizing areas that are vital for the company. Constantly on the lookout for new forms of wine enhancement, in the 2000s he launched pioneering projects such as Wine day, where 230 Spanish wineries open their doors to wine tourists, an emerging sector. He then established the nocturnal version of wine culture with Wine night and launched a restaurant guide with customer reviews. Over the years, he focused more on the management and development of overseas branches and created an international department of which he is now in charge.

“The various projects carried out over the years have put me in contact with many areas of the company, from publishing to marketing, from management control to the promotion of wine clubs abroad. This is one of the advantages of a transversal perspective, because it gives you direct experience of internal processes ”.
