Bogle to reduce 2,235 tonne bottle weight with new glass

December 14 – Clarksburg, California – Bogle Family Vineyards has taken a big step forward to help reduce the winery’s carbon footprint with the introduction of new, lighter glass bottles that will reduce packaging weight by 10% or 2,235 tonnes from 2022.

The change will take place in phases, with the first, lighter bottles being presented in Bogle’s traditional range of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Essential Red, Pinot Noir and Merlot. This change in the type of glass for the Bogle brand will reduce the weight by 1,695 tonnes.

The Juggernaut brand will see a reduction of 540 tonnes with new bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.

“Our family’s commitment to sustainability has always been a top priority in our vineyards and in our cellar, and we are now looking to make an impact with every bottle opened and enjoyed” said Jody Bogle, vice president of consumer relations. “For many years, it was assumed that consumers believed that the heavier the bottle, the higher the quality of the wine inside. Our family seeks to change this belief and show that wines of exceptional quality can and should be made with sustainability as a priority.

Lighter glass bottles consume less raw materials, use less energy to produce, and reduce the amount of fuel and emissions during transport. The 2,235 tonnes, or approximately 4.5 million pounds reduced with the introduction of lighter glass, is the winery’s first step towards reducing packaging weight.

“There is a significant environmental impact at every stage of the bottle’s life cycle, so we will continue to explore other packaging adjustments to reduce the weight of all of our wines. ” said Vice President of Winemaking Eric Aafedt. “We are still able to deliver high quality wine, but these new bottles will reduce our impact on the environment. “

Bogle Family Vineyards’ bottle weight reduction is the latest in a series of efforts to operate more sustainably. The family already demands and pays a premium to all its producer partners for having followed the CALIFORNIA RULES for sustainable viticulture program, supplies part of the cellar with its own solar panels, and is a Certified sustainable vineyard in California by the California Sustainable Winegrowers Alliance for its energy conservation, water reuse and waste recycling programs.
