If you needed more proof that a Burgundian boom is upon us, this large bottle is what you need.
A rare methusela from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2002 (DRC) sold for a stunning $ 398,400 at Acker’s auction in Hong Kong this weekend, setting a new world record.
The sale, which totaled over $ 12 million, included a large collection of DRC and Leroy who together were responsible for some 45% of the revenue and more than 100 new world records. It comes shortly after the auction house recorded $ 25 million in sales in September and is further proof that global demand for the famous French red is accelerating at a breakneck rate.
“We are in the midst of a dynamic and a market that I have not seen in 25 years of wine auctions,” Acker Chairman John Kapon said in a statement. “The Burgundy market literally doubles before our eyes.

The coveted 6-liter DRC was followed by a batch comprising half a dozen bottles of the prestigious 1993 Domaine Leroy Musigny (above) which broke a record $ 244,181. Other highlights include an original wooden case of the coveted 2002 Chevalier Montrachet D’Auvenay (Leroy) which made $ 231,329; three rare 1985 DRC Richebourg jeroboams that sold for $ 205,626; and a dozen bottles of 1996 D’Auvenay (Leroy) Chevalier Montrachet for $ 167,071.
“Buyers and sellers need to be very careful,†Kapon added. “For those lucky enough to own Burgundy for years to come, you may very well have a newly created retirement fund ready to market. “

Acker wines
While Burgundy dominated the auction, it was not the only French grape to attract impressive numbers. According to Acker, Bordeaux quietly reached 35% of the day’s totals, suggesting there is a thirst for good wine across the board.
Acker can also help quench this thirst. The auctioneer is organizing a single cellar sale on October 14 which will be dedicated to the collection of the famous oenophile Dr Ivan Volent. Acker is also currently accepting wines for its fall auctions, should you want to add a few extra dollars to that retirement fund.
